During the excavations on Petriplatz and on Schloßplatz in Berlin-Mitte, many thousands of fragments of stove tiles were found. Some outstanding tiles of the late Renaissance and the early baroque were restored in my diploma thesis as well as in the later projects.

The motifs, which were produced in the same matrices, could be reconstructed with the help of molds with silicone rubber.

Essentially, the following steps were taken:

  • Dissolution of old Ponal bonds (Petriplatz)

  • Strengthening and blocking the edges with Paraloid B 48 N

  • Bonding with 50% Paraloid B 48 N in ethyl acetate

  • Supplement the missing parts with a colored modified hard plaster

  • Retouching with Lascaux acrylic paints with various additives (graphite, mica)

The added fragments should appear homogeneous with the original, but should be recognizable on closer inspection. The retouching was made recognizable by a reduced gloss and delimiting, deepened contour lines.

Two large-format tiles with depictions of Duke Berhhard von Sachsen and the Swedish King Gustav Adolf are shown in the exhibition of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in the Neues Museum (Berlin). In the future, a reconstruction of a furnace fragment (from the castle square) is planned.
