Restoration and reconstruction of a fragment of Roman wall painting (2nd century AD) from Bogazköy (2017/2018)

In the excavation year 2017, many different fragments of a Roman wall painting were discovered in the rubble of a banquet room of a Roman building.

After painstaking detailed work, some of the matching fragments could be reassembled into a fragment with the representation of the flowers. Due to the rarity of such finds in this region, this fragment should be reconstructed for the Bogazköy Museum.

The following work steps were carried out for this:

1. Cleaning

1.1. Dry cleaning with different brushes

1.2 Wet cleaning with distilled water and cotton swabs

2. Glue the appropriate fragments with 50% Paraloid B 44 (in acetone)

3. Structure and completion of the rear side (backing)

       3.1. Stabilization with gauze and 20% Paraloid B 44

3.2. Interlayer (approx. 5 mm) made of acrylic dispersion Primal AC 33 and perlite (1: 2)

3.3. Main extension (approx. 30 mm) made of alabaster plaster with perlite

4. Structure of the addition to the front

4.1. Lower fine plaster layer (2 mm): Remmers restoration mortar with 30% Primal              AC 33 (1: 3)

4.2. Upper fine plaster layer (1 mm): marble powder mixture with 30% Primal AC 33             (1: 3)

5. Retouching

5.1. Glaze: 3% Primal AC 33 with yellow pigments

5.2. Point retouching with Lascaux acrylic paints

A suitable inlet with a stainless steel pin was attached to the rear for secure wall mounting.
